World Environment Day: COVID-19 crisis demands fundamental rethink
World Bank/Sambrian Mbaabu
A man in Kenya shops for produce as the coronavirus pandemic brings into focus the interdependence between humanity and biodiversity.
(...) COVID-19 and biodiversity
COVID-19 has revealed the vulnerability of global systems to protect the environment, health and economy, the UN Environment Programme ( UNEP ) said in a compelling video that illustrates how nature can protect us from pandemics.
(...) UNEP explains that keeping the diversity of nature and animal species intact, protects us against global health crises.
And while a high host species diversity can also reduce disease risk, if in some cases those hosts are removed, a resulting monoculture of animals is created, that are likely to increase their role as disease transmitters.

In recent years, the government of the DPRK has attached great importance to the protection,
expansion and sustainable use of the forests to improve people’s living standards and protect the
ecological environment of the country.
(...) The DPRK Government is thereby pushing ahead with the projects of expanding the forests
and nature conservation areas, and actively protecting and promoting the ecological environment
through implementation of the National Environment Protection Strategy and the Decade Plan
for Afforestation and Water Conservation, thus addressing properly the climate change.
(...) Particular priority should be given to international cooperation to assist the efforts of the
developing countries for reforestation on the principle of leaving no one behind, and effective
technical and financial assistance to enhance self-reliant capacity of developing countries for
environmental protection should also be provided with before anything else.
