A number of members also reiterated their position that a  proposed 2011 decision  to enhance mutual supportiveness between the TRIPS Agreement and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) should be the basis of further discussions. Their suggestions that the CBD Secretariat be invited to brief WTO members on developments regarding the convention and that earlier Secretariat summary notes on the review under Article 27.3(b), the relationship between TRIPS and the CBD, and on the protection of traditional knowledge and folklore (the “triplets”) be updated did not garner full support of the membership. Policy for conservation of PGRFA Policy for conservation of PGRFA The development of policy for the conservation of biodiversity (including plant genetic resources) has a long history—but most significantly, the need to address biodiversity conservation was formally recognized through the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Since its inception in 1992, Contracting Parties of the CBD have developed National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to implement its provisions. (...) The  UN Convention on Biological Diversity  (CBD) Secretariat on Monday, released a new  Global Framework for Managing Nature Through 2030 ; an evolving plan which provides a Paris-style UN agreement on biodiversity loss, to guide actions worldwide that “preserve and protect nature and its essential services to people” (...) “The framework aims to galvanize this urgent and transformative action by Governments and all of society, including indigenous peoples and local communities”, said CBD  Executive Secretary  Elizabeth Maruma Mrema.  Reduce extinctions tenfold  The draft framework for humanity to live “in harmony with nature” by 2050 was adopted by the CBD’s 196 member parties, with four broad milestone goals which need to be reached by the end of this decade.

Thanks to the generous contribution of the Japan Biodiversity Fund (JBF), UNEP-WCMC is working with the secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to develop guidance focusing on how national ecosystem assessments as a tool can support implementation of the CBD at national level. Paragraph 12 (c) of the UNEP Report is accurate in its description of the designation of UNEP to carry out the functions of the CBD Secretariat. The revised administrative arrangements agreed between UNEP and the CBD Secretariat, and endorsed by the tenth meeting of the CBD Conference of Parties (decision X/45 annex I), clarify that the CBD Executive Secretary is accountable to the Conference of the Parties for programme delivery and that the CBD Executive Secretary is accountable to the UNEP Executive Director on administrative and financial matters as stipulated by United Nations and UNEP rules and regulations, as well as the financial rules for the administration of the CBD Trust Fund. (...) The CBD Secretariat notes from paragraph 31 of the UNEP Report that UNEP and UNON are consulting on a division of labour. (...) The CBD Secretariat is very pleased to note that in relation to programmatic cooperation between CBD and UNEP, a dialogue has been initiated with UNEP on possible areas of enhanced collaboration in a memo dated 24 September 2012 from the UNEP Executive Director to the CBD Executive Secretary.
