Equally, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, in Chiapas State, the residential community of Real del Bosque has not been granted full legal status, which has serious implications in terms of access to water for over 8,000 households. (...) Even in larger urban settings such as Real del Bosque in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the Special Rapporteur was informed that the wastewater treatment plant was not functioning and that large quantities of wastewater flowed from the more than 8,000 households into local creeks near to homes.

Recently, real estate became a top commodity traded in the stock exchange market.52 The commercialization of urban land is widespread, followed by uncontrolled land speculation and monopolization which contributes to skyrocketing prices, particularly in urban centres, reducing land affordability for lower-income households. 53 Most houses produced by real estate corporations are targeted for financial investments by the upper 10 per cent of urban population.
