Additional problems for workers exist. Florida’s state legislature has used preemption to prevent cities and counties from passing local minimum wage laws, paid sick leave, and other benefits. Recent reports 42
have revealed that employers and insurance companies have been exploiting a 2003 amendment to Florida’s workers compensation law to get undocumented workers deported in order to avoid paying workers compensation claims. 43
In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, workers in South Florida who were unable to work, or have been unable to return to work, have faced significant barriers to accessing the state-run Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program. 44

The criminalization of these behaviors is directly and drastically harming the unhoused population within the state of Florida, as these laws are essentially outlawing the very act of having no other options than to be homeless.
In addition to state statutes and county laws, specific city laws must also be analyzed to understand the pervasiveness of public policies and ordinances that criminalize homelessness in Florida. (...) Supreme Court ruling allowing panhandling,71 Florida cities hire special consultants to craft ordinances that can survive, showing these laws are intentionally written to target the homeless.72 In Florida, there is no universal protection of homeless rights in the courts, but rather a patchwork of protection.

Condemning the shooting that occurred early yesterday morning in Orlando, Florida, in which 50 people were reportedly killed and dozens more were injured, United Nations officials have offered deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were murdered while simply enjoying a night out with their friends at a nightclub.

The 15-meber body reaffirmed the need for all States to combat by all means, in accordance with the UN Charter and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

UN experts urge United States to wrap up review of Trayvon Martin case, examine laws

A group of United Nations independent experts today called on the Government of the United States to finalize the ongoing review of the case involving the death of teenager Trayvon Martin, an African –American teenager who was shot in 2012 by a neighbourhood watchman in the state of Florida.
“We call upon the US Government to examine its laws that could have discriminatory impact on African Americans, and to ensure that such laws are in full compliance with the country’s international legal obligations and relevant standards,” said human rights expert Verene Shepherd, who currently heads the UN Working Group of Experts of People of African Descent.
