Global positioning systems 10. GPS is a satellite-based navigation system, operated by the United States Department of Defense. There are other global navigation satellite systems such as the Russian GLONASS and the European Galileo. In order to improve transportation, many African countries have reformed the management of their infrastructure, including by utilizing global navigation satellites to precisely determine positions in space and time. Although initially designed as navigation tools, global navigation satellite systems have developed into a multidisciplinary tool for navigation, geodesy, surveying and cartography, agriculture, atmospheric science and disaster management. In June 1999, Europe decided to acquire an independent satellite-based navigation system, known as Galileo, designed to be compatible and interoperable with the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the United States of America and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) of the Russian Federation. (...) The year 2000 also marked an important stage in the implementation of the European Galileo satellite-based navigation and location project. A major player and prime mover in the Galileo Industries industrial consortium that brings together Alcatel Space (France), Astrium Ltd. (...) Satellite positioning systems (NAVSTAR and the Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS)), originally deployed for strategic military purposes, now provide non-encrypted signals, free of charge, for civilian applications such as air, land and nautical navigation. GPS receivers allow pilots, drivers and other users to locate objects to within 100 metres. (...)
