HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATIONS THAT REQUIRE THE COUNCIL’S ATTENTION :WRITTEN STATEMENT / SUBMITTED BY PLANETARY ASSOCIATION FOR CLEAN ENERGY, INC., THE
In the United States of America alone, Lyme disease cases have risen steadily, hitting a record annual high of 475,000 in 2019. [17] And reported cases of tick- borne diseases have doubled in the last 13 years. [18] There is no vaccine or reliable testing for Lyme disease and the recommended treatment protocols fail patients somewhere between 10% to 36% percent of the time. [19] Medical costs for Lyme disease are estimated to be between US$712M to $1.3B each year in the United States of America [20] And non-native ticks seeded by the bioweapons program continue to be transported by birds, mammals, and pets, spreading disease across country borders. (...) Declassifying these documents would answer the historical questions raised here, including whether the three, highly virulent tick-borne diseases that suddenly appeared and began spreading outwards from Lyme, Connecticut were the result of an accidental release by the military in the late 1960s. [21] Fixing the situation is going to require extraordinary efforts. (...) The United States of America medical system is still reluctant to test for and treat Lyme disease and tick co-infections. The United States of America is underfunding tick-disease research.

Some, like Ebola, have been linked to deforestation; others, like Lyme disease, occur where suburban areas sprawl into newly-cleared land. (...) But when people degrade or destroy natural habitats, the animal community changes dramatically,” says Richard Ostfeld, Senior Scientist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York, who researches how diseases like Lyme emerge in degraded places. “Some of the most important zoonotic hosts – the rodents, and sometimes, bats – often increase in abundance as their predators and competitors are driven away. (...) It is only when a natural system is disturbed that viruses like coronavirus are passed on Felicia Keesing, a disease ecologist at Bard College in Annandale, New York, has studied twelve diseases, including West Nile fever and Lyme disease, in ecosystems around the world. In every study, she found that diseases became more prevalent as biodiversity was lost.

Examples of environmental and climate factors that affect disease dynamics include rainfall and flooding, which led to the emergence of a new rodent-borne virus (Sin Nombre) in the Southwestern United States, and increase the risk of malaria, dengue, and cholera epidemics in many parts of the world; unusually warm conditions, which have been linked to food-borne disease outbreaks in Europe; and environmental modifications such as encroachment on previously forested area, which can facilitate emergence of previously unknown zoonotic diseases, such as Lyme disease in the northeastern United States. 3.

RESPONSES TO THE SET OF QUESTIONS REGARDING POLICIES, EXPERIENCES AND PRACTICES IN THE USE OF SPACE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR GLOBAL HEALTH
Its focus is to provide evidence-based data to support risk modelling and mapping, primarily relating to the development of environmental determinant indicators linked to risk factors for Lyme disease and mosquito-borne diseases. In 2017, the Canadian Space Agency began supporting a consortium of researchers from the University of Montreal, the Université du Québec à Montréal, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the City of Montreal, through its Science and Operational Applications Research programme for the utilization of satellite Earth observation data to identify potential health risks in cities. (...) • The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently conducting a research project to improve its knowledge of determinants of health by integrating Earth observation imagery and tele-epidemiology, geographical intelligence, risk modelling and epidemiological approaches in order to produce evidence-based data to support multi-scale and multi-temporal risk modelling and mapping for Lyme disease risk factors and environmental/remote-sensed early warning indicators for mosquito-borne diseases
