REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE RIGHT OF EVERYONE TO THE ENJOYMENT OF THE HIGHEST ATTAINABLE STANDARD OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH, ANAND GROVER
Pharmaceutical companies have a responsibility to ensure that their medicines are of good quality, safe and efficacious, for example, they must comply with national and global manufacturing standards e.g. the current World Health Organization Good Manufacturing Practice Guidelines. (...) Because of its critical social function, a patent on a life-saving medicine places important right-to-health responsibilities on the patent holder. (...) While hitherto GSK’s marketing has focused on the ‘A/B’ categories, Tearing down the barriers is piloting ways of enhancing access to the ‘C/D’ sections of the market e.g. tiered pricing within, as well as between, countries; gauging the relationship between price and volume for selected products in some middle-income countries; differential branding strategies; and local sourcing or manufacturing designed to address cost issues.13 Interestingly, Tearing down the barriers is absent from the GSK’s Corporate Responsibility Report (2008) published in early 2009, although the company still seems to be pursuing the general approach e.g. relevant pilot programmes remain in place.

PROPOSALS FOR AMENDMENTS TO ANNEXES A AND B TO THE ‎MINAMATA CONVENTION ON MERCURY ‎: ADDENDUM: PROPOSAL BY THE EUROPEAN UNION TO AMEND PART I OF ANNEX A, ‎PART II OF ANNEX A AND PART I OF ANNEX B TO THE MINAMATA ‎CONVENTION ON MERCURY
Sodium- potassium alloy (NaK) offers a suitable alternative to mercury in plastics manufacturing. These alternatives are already commercially available, with mercury-free transducers manufactured in and exported from Europe, Asia and North America. (...) Sodium-potassium alloy alternatives can withstand temperatures of 400°C and according to Gräff (2015, p. 4), their mercury-free alterative is ‘100% market-compatible with all common manufacturers’. Due to its capacity to function under high temperatures, NaK is an ideal alternative for the plastics manufacturing industry (Industry Search, 2019). (...) Examples of regional or national restrictions The export, import and manufacturing of mercury-containing strain gauges to be used with plethysmographs is prohibited in the EU from 31 December 2020 by Regulation (EU) 2017/852 on Mercury.

BACKGROUND PAPER ON NEW SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS RELEVANT TO THE CONVENTION ON THE PROHIBITION OF THE DEVELOPMENT, PRODUCTION AND STOCKPILING OF BACTERIOLOGICAL (BIOLOGICAL) AND TOXIN WEAPONS AND ON THEIR DESTRUCTION / PREPARED BY THE SECRETARIAT
For example, bioinformatics can search for genes of interest making it possible to sort through a genome sequence, select a gene, determine whether it has a known function by comparing it to gene databases, and predict its cellular location and molecular weight. 8. (...) This technology has been applied to the highly pathogenic filoviruses to study the function of the virion glycoproteins. 21. Experiments involving the production of recombinant viruses expressing foreign genes have generated unexpected and controversial results. (...) The targets for new candidate antiviral drugs include inhibition of a number of different functions: cell entry; viral protease; viral nucleic acid synthesis and processing; regulatory proteins; and viral release.
