Human rights law requires that water be available continuously and in a sufficient
quantity to meet the requirements of personal and domestic use, including drinking,
personal hygiene and sanitation, food preparation, washing of clothes and dishes and
cleaning.8 Furthermore, the supply needs to be continuous enough to allow for the
collection of sufficient amounts to satisfy all needs, without compromising the quality of
water.
14. (...) In Tuvalu, groundwater was
historically a non-potable secondary water source used for washing dishes and clothes,
bathing, food preparation and cleaning where salinity levels were not prohibitive.
