BACKGROUND PAPER ON NEW SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS RELEVANT TO THE CONVENTION ON THE PROHIBITION OF THE DEVELOPMENT, PRODUCTION AND STOCKPILING OF BACTERIOLOGICAL (BIOLOGICAL) AND TOXIN WEAPONS AND ON THEIR DESTRUCTION / PREPARED BY THE SECRETARIAT
Identifying which proteins a target protein interacts with can help in understanding its function. (...) Protein chips can be used to study protein-protein interactions and interactions between proteins and drugs. (...) BWC/CONF.V/4/Add.l page 18 Recombinant protein expression 36. Development of recombinant DNA techniques has facilitated the integration of “upstream” gene cloning methods with “downstream” protein purification methods.

NOTE VERBALE DATED 24 OCTOBER 2012 FROM THE PERMANENT MISSION OF THE PLURINATIONAL STATE OF BOLIVIA TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARIAT
It is important to point out that quinoa is the only plant food that contains all the essential amino acids, vitamins and trace elements and is also gluten free. (...) Due to the high essential amino acid content of its protein, quinoa is considered the only plant food that provides all the essential amino acids, which are extremely close to the human nutrition standards established by FAO. The balance of essential amino acids in quinoa protein is superior to wheat, barley and soy, and comparable with milk protein.

ADVANCES IN ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES : BACKGROUND INFORMATION DOCUMENT / SUBMITTED BY THE IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT UNIT
Considerable progress has been made in recent years across a broad range of different "-omics", such as genomics (the study of all the genetic information in an organism), transcriptomics (the study of all the RNA in an organism), proteomics (the study of all the proteins in an organism), metabolomics (the study of all the biochemical processes or metabolism of an organism), as well as how they relate to one and other. 2. (...) Protein analysis tools have been developed to: take advantage of power graph analysis; identify protein functional modules; as well as for sequence analysis.163 31. (...) These computational models can then be tested through laboratory experimentation, where all the equipment is controlled by the same computer that developed the theories.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE RIGHT TO FOOD, JEAN ZIEGLER : ADDENDUM
Carlos Lage Dávila, Cuba imports 54 per cent of the calories consumed and 64 per cent of the protein. It is difficult to grow all the food required in Cuba: tropical agriculture is difficult and cereals A/HRC/7/5/Add.3 page 8 must be imported. (...) Of the cooperative’s 27 tractors, all over 30 years old, only three were in operation, using a combination of spare parts from the others. (...) Cuba has been focusing on increasing pork production in order to satisfy demand for protein. In 2007, pork production reached 150,000 tons.

The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident ................................. 6-10 4 IV. (...) Though units 1, 2 and 3 went into automatic shut-down mode as soon as the earthquake struck, the electricity supply to the power plant was lost. Tsunami waves as high as 14 metres hit the plant approximately 50 minutes after the earthquake, overwhelming its walls. (...) The detailed surveys include a thyroid ultrasound examination for all children in Fukushima aged up to 18 years, a comprehensive health check for all residents from the evacuation zones, an assessment of mental health and lifestyles of all residents from the evacuation zones, and a recording of all pregnancies and births among all women in the prefecture who were pregnant on 11 March 2011.49 24.

INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM : OVERVIEW OF CURRENT INDIGENOUS RELATED ACTIVITIES OF THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS
Countries are interdependent in regard to these resources, which are the raw material for all plant improvement by farmers and their communities, by plant breeders and through biotechnology. In the context of the FAO International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which was the first international agreement for the conservation and sustainable utilization of plant genetic resources, the 1989 FAO Conference, by resolution 5/89, considering that, in the history of mankind, unnumbered generations of farmers had conserved, improved and made available plant genetic resources, endorsed Farmers’ Rights, defined as meaning “rights arising from the past, present and future contributions of farmers in conserving, improving, and making available plant genetic resources, particularly those in the centres of origin/diversity”, with the aim of “ensuring full benefits to farmers, and supporting the continuation of their contributions”, in order to “assist farmers and farming communities, in all regions of the world, but especially in the areas of origin/diversity of plant genetic resources, in the protection and conservation of their plant genetic resources, and of the natural biosphere” and “to allow farmers, their communities, and countries in all regions, to participate fully in the benefits derived, at present and in the future, from the improved use of plant genetic resources, through plant breeding and other scientific methods”. (...) The Treaty, which will enter into force upon ratification by 40 countries, makes specific provision for the recognition of Farmers’ Rights in article 9, which reads as follows: 9.1 The Contracting Parties recognize the enormous contribution that the local and indigenous communities and farmers of all regions of the world, particularly those in the centres of origin and crop diversity, have made and will continue to make for the conservation and development of plant genetic resources which constitute the basis of food and agriculture production throughout the world. 9.2 The Contracting Parties agree that the responsibility for realizing Farmers’ Rights, as they relate to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, rests with national Governments.

VISIT TO ITALY :REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE IMPLICATIONS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND WASTES, MARCOS ORELLANA
Ilva Taranto 50. The Ilva plant in Puglia – Ilva Taranto – is Europe’s largest steel plant. (...) Moreover, the survey found that industrial emissions were responsible for 237 cases of malignant tumours (18 cases per year), 247 coronary events (19 per year) and 937 cases of respiratory diseases (74 per year) (mostly among children) – all necessitating hospitalization.47 The regional environmental agency for Puglia released an assessment of expected health impacts caused by the Ilva plant before and after the issuance of an integrated pollution prevention and control permit (i.e., comparing 2010 data with 2016 estimates). (...) Italy54 the European Court of Human Rights observed that the environmental contamination caused by the Ilva plant endangered the health of local residents and concluded that Italy had failed to take all the necessary measures to effectively protect them.

VISIT TO ITALY - REPORT OF THE WORKING GROUP ON THE ISSUE OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS AND OTHER BUSINESS ENTERPRISES
The Working Group learned about the pollution and illness caused by the Isochimica asbestos plant that removed asbestos from railway carriages in the middle of the city centre in the 1980s and, after the closure of the plant, mismanaged its removal. (...) After the closure of the asbestos plant, community members described practices of dumping asbestos in the river, burying asbestos in locations around the plant and elsewhere and mixing waste asbestos with concrete to form cubes that were left to deteriorate in public places. (...) Since 2012, the ILVA steel plant has gone through complex legal proceedings.
