One of the most detailed public health studies on fracking, conducted by the
Department of Health of New York State, found increased symptoms reported by residents
living near gas drilling sites of skin rashes, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and
breathing difficulties, which were found to be consistent with exposure to the chemicals used
in fracking.

acute symptoms thought to be associated with exposure to oil, such as difficulty breathing,
burning eyes from the fumes, dizziness and nausea.14 Another study reported that respondents
who were most involved in the clean-up operations presented similar symptoms, such as
shortness of breath, cough, sore throat, headaches, nausea and skin irritation, and the Special

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON FREEDOM OF RELIGION OR BELIEF ON HIS MISSION TO ALBANIA
Several government officials, including those affiliated with the country’s
security apparatus, reported that the phenomenon of ethnic Albanian fighters, including
some travelling from Albania to Syria,3 the recent convictions of two self-declared imams
and six other persons for recruiting foreign terrorist fighters (or inciting them to fight
abroad),4 and an apparent rise in the number of unregistered mosques built by foreign
funding sources, prompted the Government to change its “laissez-faire” policy that allowed
religious groups to organize and build new houses of worship.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE IMPLICATIONS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND WASTES ON HIS MISSION TO GERMANY : NOTE / BY THE SECRETARIAT
According to a study by the European Agency for Health and Safety at Work,
around 15 per cent of European workers report handling chemical products for a quarter of
their working time and 19 per cent report breathing in dust, fumes and smoke at their
workplaces.23 This study highlighted nanoparticles, ultrafine particles, man-made fibres,
carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances, dermal exposures, exposures in waste
management and the increasing use of allergenic and sensitizing substances as emerging
risks.

REPORT OF THE WORKING GROUP ON THE ISSUE OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS AND OTHER BUSINESS ENTERPRISES ON ITS VISIT TO THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA : NOTE / BY THE SECRETARIAT
It is also alleged that workers at third-tier suppliers of Samsung Electronics and LG
Electronics, namely YN Tech, BK Tech and Deogyong ENG, were diagnosed with acute
optic nerve damage and toxic encephalopathy as a result of methanol poisoning at the
workplace.12 Allegedly, the exposure occurred during the cutting and moulding of
aluminium parts for use in mobile phones, as workers were not provided with adequate
health and safety training, information, ventilation or protection (gloves, eye masks and
breathing masks), in violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (art. 5), and
exposure could have been avoided, in part, by replacing methanol with ethanol.
