LETTER DATED 15 MARCH 2013 FROM THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MONACO TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
Washington state oyster aquaculture is
the first example of ocean acidification affecting businesses.
• Carpet shell clams, cupped oysters, scallops, shrimp, sea cucumbers, coral reef
fish and aquatic plants are all important marine harvest species in the region.
(...)
• The majority of laboratory studies indicate a negative impact of ocean
acidification on bivalves; therefore, highly valuable aquaculture food enterprises
producing clams and oysters in East and South Asia and scallops in China and
Japan may be particularly sensitive (...) Primary shellfish harvests include clams, scallops, abalone, oysters and pearl
oyster farms.
