It does not apply to inshell almonds intended to be cracked or for industrial further industrial processing, or for use in the food industry. Inshell almonds are classified into three commercial types as defined below, according to the hardness of the shell: 1 − Soft type: inshell almonds which can be easily cracked with the fingers. − Semi-soft type: inshell almonds which need a nutcracker to be cracked. − Hard type: inshell almonds which can be cracked only with a hammer or similar devices. Minimum requirements (i) In all classes subject to the special provisions for each class and the tolerances allowed, the hazelnuts must be: (a) Characteristics of the shell - well formed; shell is not noticeably misshapen - intact; slight cracks or superficial damage and slight splitting of the shell are not considered as a defect provided that the edible part of the fruit is protected - sound; free from defects likely to affect the natural keeping quality of the fruit and of any damage by insects or pests - clean; practically free from adhering dirt and any other visible foreign matter, practically free of adhering husk (not more than 5% of individual shell surface in aggregate, may have adhering husk) - dry; free from abnormal external moisture. It is known that surface cracks can appear on tanks made of fine-grained steel with a yield stress of more than 400 N/mm² when product UN 1005 ammonia, anhydrous is used. (...) However, as the risk of surface cracks only applies to tanks which are also used to transport UN No. 1005 ammonia, anhydrous (contained in the product list and on the tank plate), UIP believes the text must be amended. 4. (...) It would therefore only be necessary to carry out regular magnetic powder tests on tanks which are susceptible to surface cracks due to their use with the ammonia product.
