The work of the General Assembly and its Committees on this issue is therefore of great importance in ensuring that adequate preventive measures are put in place through pre-deployment training as well as the availability of criminal justice measures when such serious crimes occur. 4. Malaysia reiterates its commitment to work together with the other Member States on this issue and to explore appropriate mechanisms for dealing with the criminal accountability of UN officials and experts on mission. I think that what has motivated me throughout my career (and in this post, in particular) has been the issue of pursuing accountability and working on victims’ rights, particularly in a criminal justice context. And I was very excited to get the opportunity to work from the global perspective: first, as a Human Rights Officer, later as a Desk Officer with the Africa team, and currently as the Legal and Criminal Justice Coordinator (which of course takes me back, in a way, to my initial motivation to look work on the issue of criminal justice and accountability for victims).   (...) This thematic debate will provide an input to the Fourteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to take place in Kyoto in April 2020, the theme of which is “Advancing crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law: towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda” (GA resolution 72/192).  (...) In this vein, the debate will focus on priorities, gaps and emerging issues that require further attention and support in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – from the standpoint of regional organizations and the point of view of national policies and international cooperation. (...) Objective The main objective of the High-level thematic debate is to provide a platform for participants to exchange views on: i) What concrete measures can be taken to build and strengthen strategic partnerships between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations in matters of crime prevention and criminal justice? ii) What needs to be done to strengthen mechanisms to promote common understanding and effective coordination across a range of issues relevant to crime prevention and criminal justice?
