In most countries, an industrial design needs to be registered in order to be protected under industrial design law as a “registered design”. In some countries, industrial designs are protected under patent law as “design patents ”.

This Act is to provide protection of layout-designs (topographies) of integrated circuits and
related matters.
§1.3. (...) Right to Protection
(a) The right to layout-design registration shall belong to the creator of the layout-design. (...) (c) Importing, selling or otherwise distributing for commercial purposes the protected layout-
design, an integrated circuit in which the protected layout-design is incorporated or an article
incorporating such an integrated circuit in so far as it continues to contain an unlawfully
reproduced layout-design.
