The effect of this is called, ‘horizontal segregation’. • While men and women have proven to be able to learn and perform in any type of job, based 4 GENDER MAINSTREAMING MADE EASY VOLuME I I How gender stereotypes are created and reinforced Meta- sterotype: “Women are not good leaders” Social phenomenon: Vertical seggregation Social phenomenon: Horizontal seggregation Meta- sterotype: “There are male jobs and female jobs” on personal talent, rather than gender, this stereotype has been reinforced by what we see in the labour market, discouraging girls and boys to pursue different paths, and reinforcing expectations of gender roles in both the private and public spheres. • The different paths boys and girls choose to pursue ultimately impact on gender segregation in the labour markets while the existing gender division of labour further influences vocational and educational orientation; perpetuating the vicious cycle.

Governments should make sure that all people have equal chances to get a job in the public service. This means the conditions to get the job must be the same for everyone. (...) People with disabilities who are elected should get the support they need to do their job well. Governments should encourage people with disabilities to stand for elections and get involved in politics.
