Each State party may nominate one person from its own nationals to stand for election. Members are elected for a term of four years. New members of the Human Rights Committee are elected by secret ballot by the States parties from a list of nominees, with due consideration being given to equitable geographical distribution, relevant legal experience and balanced gender representation.
