Inclusive sustainable development: youth, sport and the 2030 Agenda, 7 July, 1-2:30 pm (EDT)
UN DESA’s Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), which houses the substantive mandate on sport for development and peace at the United Nations, is organizing a Voluntary National Review (VNR) Lab at the 2021 HLPF entitled “Inclusive Social Development: Youth, Sports and the 2030 Agenda”. The dialogue brought together stakeholders from different sectors with diverse backgrounds and experiences to share new research and good practices and to identify challenges, opportunities and policy recommendations on a key issue: the critical role that technology can play in advancing sport as an enabler of development and peace. Sport for Development and Peace
The Secretary-General Report on “Strengthening the global framework for leveraging sport for development and peace” provides a review of progress towards the implementation of the United Nations Action Plan on Sport for Development and Peace and proposes an update to the Action Plan, drawing on input received from Member States, the United Nations system and other stakeholders. It also includes recommendations for action by Member States and the United Nations system that bring the existing tracks of sport-based policy and practice at the international level closer together in order to promote improved coherence and collaboration in placing sport at the service of humanity, as an enabler of sustainable development.

The COVID-19 pandemic is spreading to more countries, territories and regions of the world at an alarming rate and physical and social distancing practices are becoming commonplace to stop the spread of the disease. The closure of gyms, sport facilities and stadiums, public pools, dance studios, and playgrounds mean that many of us are not able to actively participate in individual or group sporting or physical activities, nor watch live sporting events. As a result, the global sporting community is facing serious challenges due to measures imposed in countless countries around the world.

The annual World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum is a global multi-stakeholder platform facilitating the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines for advancing sustainable development. The WSIS Forum will therefore serve as a key forum for discussing the role of ICTs as a means of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and targets, with due regard to the global mechanism for follow-up and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Sport is a key enabler to achieve the SDGs, this is captured in the UN General Assembly resolution “Sport as an Enabler of Sustainable Development” (Document A/73/L.36), that addresses the important contribution Sport has on Sustainable Development such as Empowerment of Women and Youth, Refugees, Communities Development, Health, Education, and Social Inclusion. (...) In recent years the role of ICTs in advancing sport development has been very prominent. For the third time during the WSIS Forum 2021, a track will be introduced on sport as an enabler of Sustainable Development, highlighting the aspects of social inclusion of women, sport and innovative technologies.
