Critical, emerging and enduring issues for food security and nutrition

The HLPE-FSN Critical, emerging and enduring issues note was prepared in the context of an emerging global food crisis of enormous proportions, greatly magnified by the war in Ukraine, further accentuated by closely following upon the COVID-19 pandemic. The seven issues will be presented in a special online event, on Friday, 30 September , 14:30-16:30 CEST.

Leading Scholars Name ITU Among World’s Most Enduring Institutions
ITU cited as among those that have adapted, endured and prevailed
Geneva, 20 December 2004 — ITU was named as one of the world’s top ten most enduring institutions by a panel of distinguished scholars from universities across the United States. (...) Dr Ralph Shrader, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Booz Allen Hamilton describes an enduring institution as one "that has changed and grown in unswerving success and relevance — yet remained true through time to its founding principles."

The archives of the International Prisoners of War Agency (IPWA), a body created during the early days of the war, bear witness to the scale of the suffering endured by victims of the war across the world. Seven million soldiers were taken prisoner, many civilians were interned on enemy soil and millions more endured military occupation by the enemy or fled from combat zones and occupied territories. (...) Critical, Emerging and Enduring Issues for Food Security and Nutrition – Draft Conclusions
MATTERS TO BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE COMMITTEE
The Committee:
a) Considers document CFS 2022/50/Inf.16: “Third CFS HLPE-FSN Note on Critical,
Emerging and Enduring Issues for Food Security and Nutrition” as presented by Bernard Lehmann, CFS HLPE-FSN Chairperson;
b) Takes note of the following views expressed and potential issues suggested as important considerations for upcoming Open-Ended Working Group discussions ahead of CFS 51 in October 2023 on the preparation of the next CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPoW);
i. […] ii. […] iii. […]
c) In line with indications included in Annex B of the Implementation Report of the CFS
Evaluation, recommends that the CFS Bureau, in collaboration with the Advisory Group, and with the support and participation of interested CFS stakeholders, prepare a draft CFS MYPoW 2024-2027 to be submitted for consideration and endorsement at CFS 51.

Children in Nigeria and surrounding countries, continuing to endure ‘horrendous violations’

Girls and boys in northeast Nigeria are continuing to endure brutal abuse at the hands of Boko Haram, and are also being deeply affected by military operations taking place to counter the terrorist group, despite noteworthy efforts, according the UN chief’s latest report on children and armed conflict.
“The children of Nigeria and neighboring countries continued to endure horrendous violations by Boko Haram”, said Virginia Gamba, the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, in a statement on Thursday, adding that the group’s expansion across the Lake Chad Basin region is “a serious concern” for Secretary-General António Guterres .

In Ukraine, extreme winter cold is making life harder for thousands of people whose lives have already been torn apart by conflict. Hoping to find safer places to live, families in the region have had to endure a battle for survival, in buildings without heat or electricity.
