Note of the Secretariat
1. The Executive Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe is invited to adopt the below draft decision on a cross-cutting theme for the high-level segment of the 69th session of the Economic Commission for Europe.
EXCOM decides to:
a) designate “Promoting circular economy and sustainable use of natural resources in the UNECE region” as cross-cutting theme for the high-level segment of the 69th Commission session.
b) invite relevant subsidiary bodies of UNECE and the secretariat to consider how they may contribute, as appropriate, to the cross-cutting theme of the 69th Commission session within their respective mandates, ongoing work and existing resources, and while making full use of the existing nexuses.
c) request the secretariat to prepare a background document on the cross-cutting theme, detailing a number of relevant UNECE activities and their impact, for discussion at the 69th Commission session.
d) request the secretariat to conduct a post-session lessons learned survey to review the implications of the practice of designating a cross-cutting theme early in the process, and to present to EXCOM a proposal for the preparation of future Commission sessions taking the survey findings into account.

The symposium will provide the platform to share the existing knowledge and practical solutions for sustainable management of saline and sodic soils and to discuss the actions needed to upscale good practices and technologies . THEMES
The Symposium will bring science and policy together to review the status and challenges of salt-affected soils conservation and sustainable use. It will be divided into three main themes:
THEME 1 : Assessment, mapping, and monitoring of salt-affected soils;
THEME 2 : Integrated soil-water-crop solutions in rehabilitation and management of salt-affected areas;
THEME 3 : Agenda for action to prevent and rehabilitate salt-affected soils, protect natural saline and sodic soils, and scale-up sustainable soil management practices.

Philippines National Recommendations for the 11th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour “Digitalisation to Promote Decent Work for Migrant Workers in ASEAN”

The National Preparatory Meeting for the 11th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour (11th AFML) was convened on 04 September 2018 in Manila, Philippines, with the theme “Digitalization to Promote Decent Work for Migrant Workers in ASEAN.”
(...) During the workshop the following sub-themes and corresponding recommendations were discussed and agreed upon, respectively:
Sub-theme 1: Digitalization of migrant labor management
The consultation meeting/workshop examined the initiatives in the AMS to leverage technology in managing migrant labour, such as e-governance systems for migration management, digital tools for law enforcement and regulating occupational safety and health.
(...) Sub-theme 2: Digital services to migrant workers
The consultation meeting/workshop focused on efforts in the AMS to enable migrant workers’ access to digital support services, including comparing and making informed decision on choice of recruitment and remittance channels.
