The COVID-19 pandemic and the measures put in place to contain its spread are taking a heavy toll on the tourism sector, on which the economies of these small island developing States depend. (...) On average, the tourism sector represents 30% of the GDP of these countries. This share exceeds 50% for SIDS like the Maldives, Seychelles, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Grenada, says the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC). While this activity generates around $ 30 billion per year in these countries, a 25% drop in tourism receipts would lead to a 7.3% decline in GDP, and even beyond 15% for the most dependent SIDS.
