  South Asia seeks to improve flash flood early warnings | World Meteorological Organization

WMO’s Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS) seeks to strengthen the capabilities of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to issue timely and accurate flash flood warnings and to integrate these in their operational activities. (...) The primary objective of the workshop was to evaluate the competency of forecasters to be future trainers of the Flash Food Guidance System. Participants had to provide in-depth analysis of past flash flood events in the region, simulating flash flood forecasting as well as the practices of disseminating effective flash flood advisories, watches and warnings to the public and DMAs. (...) The Flash Flood Guidance System is supported by the World Meteorological Organization, the U.S.

  South Asia Flash Flood Guidance System Launched | World Meteorological Organization

This will enable all member countries to issue impact-based forecasting, at watershed and also city level, of flash floods which are very sudden and of short duration. In turn, this will help reduce the loss of life and property. “Flash floods and riverine floods cause major loss of life and property in South Asia during the monsoon season.  (...) Since September 2020, the IMD has started issuing regional flash flood advisories to the Member countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka) alerting NMHSs and stakeholders on possible flash flood risks and associated heavy rainfall and/or snowmelt daily with the lead time up to 36 hours.

  Flash Flood Guidance System with Global Coverage (FFGS) | World Meteorological Organization

Accounting for approximately 85% of flooding cases, flash floods also have the highest mortality rate among different classes of flooding, including riverine and coastal. Flash floods differ from river floods in their short time scales and occurrence on small spatial scales, which makes flash flood forecasting a different challenge from large-river flood forecasting. (...) However, for the majority of these areas, there exists no formal process or capacity for developing flash flood warnings. To address the issues associated with flash floods, especially the lack of capacity to develop effective flash flood warnings, the Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS) was designed and developed for interactive use by meteorological and hydrological forecasters throughout the world.

  South East Europe gets new flash flood App | World Meteorological Organization

To address the issues, the Flash Flood Guidance System (FFGS) was designed and developed for interactive use by meteorological and hydrological forecasters throughout the world. (...) The App is providing forecasters with information about the possibility of flash flood occurrence, location (county and sub-basin), sufficient lead time to issue flash flood alert and warning, and other important information such as intensity of forecast precipitation and state of soil moisture. (...) “With FFGS e-mail alerts, all interested parties will be in a position to have valuable information at their disposal that is essential for issuing timely and accurate flash flood warnings. In the situation of coronavirus outbreak, this is a valuable opportunity to share information quickly about potentially vulnerable flash flood regions as an output from the FFGS.
