They were able to meet with and interview male, female, juvenile and transgender detainees in private, in full compliance with the terms of reference of his mandate. (...) In Mixed Prison Unit 3 (Formosa Province), housing both female and male detainees, five female detainees were held in a cell that was facing a cell holding male detainees just a few metres away across the open corridor. (...) Although physical contact between male and female inmates was not possible, the female inmates reported being verbally harassed and intimidated by the male detainees in neighbouring cells.

Worldwide, more men than women commit suicide. The world male/female suicide ratio is roughly 3.5 men to 1 woman. (...) For Turkey, the male/female suicide ratio is about 1.5 to 1, similar to many other developing countries.13 36. (...) In addition, there were 362 attempted suicides (147 male, 215 female). The Van figures appear to be incorrect given that the 2003 official statistics note 40 female suicides for Van in that year alone.

The Sri Lanka Police has also established 43 children and women’s bureaus headed by female police officers in order to encourage women to report instances of abuse and exploitation. (...) Another sector which is female-dominated is domestic work. This is reportedly the least regulated industry in the country. (...) One of the reasons for establishing this system was reportedly the tragic incident of an underage female domestic worker being A/HRC/51/26/Add.1 GE.22-10669 13 executed in Saudi Arabia.23 The report includes a stipulation that prospective female domestic workers with children under 5 years of age are banned from migrating overseas for work.

As many as 51.7 % births take place without assistance from any health personnel. Practices such as female foeticide also affect women’s health, as they are forced to go through multiple pregnancies and abortions.1 This combined with the low proportion of institutional deliveries is a grave cause of concern. (...) The recommendations of Regional Public Hearings and National Action Plan were communicated to all States/Union Territories. 7. The issue of female foeticide and infanticide has also been examined in detail by NHRC, India. (...) Analyzing the ‘Human Rights Dimension of Census 2001’, it also called for a concerted effort to end the misuse of sex-determination tests that had encouraged the evil practice of female foeticide, for it not only violated the right to life but happened to be one of the worst possible forms of discrimination based on sex.

Children of female prisoners are permitted to live in the open-air prison with them up to the age of 9 years. (...) In addition, there is no pretrial detention centre for women, and the Working Group observed various ad hoc arrangements for holding female pretrial detainees. For example, female inmates were occupying the juvenile pretrial detention facility at the pretrial detention centre for children in Thimphu. (...) The Working Group was informed that, in the event of an increase in the number of female clients, treatment would be made operational at the Serbithang facility, which already had the required structure and trained female counsellors in place. 50.

I held meetings in San Salvador and visited women in the Usulatan and La Paz departments, and the female prison in San Salvador. II. THE NATIONAL SETTING A. (...) The women’s studies institute CEMUJER (Centro de Estudios para la Mujer) trains police officers in women’s rights and counsels female employees subjected to harassment in the PNC. (...) At the time of my visit there were 650 female prisoners. The female prisoners whom I spoke to at the women’s prison in San Salvador were mainly concerned with improving detention conditions and receiving more vocational training.
