REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON CONTEMPORARY FORMS OF SLAVERY, INCLUDING ITS CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES, GULNARA SHAHINIAN : ADDENDUM
In some instances, former female slaves end up working in urban areas as domestic
workers for relatives of their former masters or in sex work. In other cases, former female
slaves set up some small businesses selling items such as couscous or mint. (...) By
giving away the children of a female slave, or another member of her family, the master is
able to keep a tighter hold on the female slave.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, ITS CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES, RADHIKA COOMARASWAMY, SUBMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS RESOLUTION 2001/49
The Special Rapporteur is also concerned that harmful traditional practices continue in
Sierra Leone. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is widespread and is part of the initiation into
the Bundu society. (...) With the
increase in female headed households caused by male fatalities during the conflict, women and

girls often lack either the legal means or the cultural community support with which to reclaim
their property.
41. (...) The girls were checked by a female companion of the
commander, who verified whether they were virgins.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON TORTURE AND OTHER CRUEL, INHUMAN OR DEGRADING TREATMENT OR PUNISHMENT, MANFRED NOWAK : ADDENDUM
The Special Rapporteur notes that at the facilities he visited the conditions of detention of
female detainees are much better than those of men. The female sections/wings of the prisons are
not overcrowded and women are provided with considerably better facilities. He welcomes that
at Port Harcourt prison, the female detainees are able to engage in (vocational) activities, such as
sewing, etc.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON EXTRAJUDICIAL, SUMMARY OR ARBITRARY EXECUTIONS, PHILIP ALSTON : ADDENDUM
(By comparison, the female population increased by 8 per cent.22)
23. (...) A PDH study based on media reports showed that, among those murder victims
who experienced torture or abuse, the acts committed by the perpetrators were generally similar
whether the victim was male or female. Of those bodies showing signs of torture or abuse,
roughly 40 per cent of both male and female corpses showed signs of strangulation, about
15 per cent of female corpses were left naked and about 11 per cent of male corpses were. (...) The increase in female homicides involving abuse or
torture shown in the PDH study would account for at least two fifths of the increase in total
female homicides shown in police statistics.
