PROPOSAL FOR DRAFT AMENDMENTS TO REGULATION NO. 43, SAFETY GLAZING / TRANSMITTED BY THE EXPERTS FROM BELGIUM AND THE UNITED KINGDOM
Paragraphs 9.1.4.1. and 9.1.4.2., should be deleted:
Annexes 14 and 16,
Insert a new paragraph 6.1.3.3., to read:
“6.1.3.3. For sun roofs, the abrasion test is not required.”
Annex 21,
Paragraph 3.1., amend to read:
“3.1. (...) They are re-introduced as a correction

(ii) The text relating to the abrasion symbols has been redrafted on the basis
of the one of the paragraph 5.5.5. and the reference to the relevant annex has
been added.
(...) (i) As wished by the Industry and the delegation of Japan, sun roofs will be
exempted from abrasion testing. The argument is that no field of vision has to
be ensured by means of sun roofs; therefore, it is rational to exempt them from
any abrasion provisions.

Measures should be devised to prevent that the numbers on the plates are no longer legible
after a short time as a result of being hit by stones, cleaning, abrasion owing to the weather and
frequent changing of digits.
(...) Following are some
examples:
- Abrasion tests are given in IMO Resolution A.658 (16) of 19 October 1989 for
testing the abrasion resistance of reflective film.
(...)
- Some examples of methods for testing the abrasion resistance of digits are given
below. Particular methods should be agreed upon that are appropriate to the practical
requirements to be met by plates.

REGULATION NO. 43 - REVISION 4
Test of resistance to abrasion
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the resistance of a safety
glazing to abrasion exceeds a specified value.
8.1.3.2. (...) Cross cut test
The purpose of this test is to examine whether any abrasive resistant coating
of a rigid plastic glazing has sufficient adherence.
(...) Plastic glazing materials shall be subjected to the tests listed in the following
table. In the case of the abrasion test, the applicant shall have the alternative
between the Taber test and the set of three tests composed of the carwash,
sand drop and the wiper test.

and their integrals with time caused by projections on the
helmet, e.g. visor fittings, screws, press studs and steps in
the shell surface, etc.

of 225 mm and is securely clamped to the base of the anvil to
prevent slippage.
7.4.2.3.1.2.1. The abrasive anvil should be used to assess the tangential
forces and their integrals with time caused by friction
against the outer surface of the helmet. (...) When tested against the abrasive anvil, the helmet shall
satisfy the following requirements:
7.4.4.2.1. the peak longitudinal force measured on the anvil shall not
exceed 4,000 N, nor shall its integral with time exceed 28 Ns
