Provinces have taken steps to develop rural economies, encourage the production and consumption of local foods and adopt policies seeking to improve food security and promote healthy diets, including British Columbia’s Community Food Action Initiative, the Yukon’s Nutrition Framework, Alberta’s Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth, Manitoba’s Northern Healthy Foods Initiative, Ontario’s Student Nutrition Program and Nunavut’s Framework for Action on Nutrition. (...) In Manitoba, the Healthy Together Now programme supports 83 community projects that promote healthy eating, and the Healthy Schools initiatives improves the quality of food served in schools (School Nutrition Policy), supports breakfast and snack programmes (School Nourishment Programs), and links local farmers to schools to ensure adequate provision of fruits and vegetables to school children (Vegetable and Fruit Pilot Program). 45. At the national level,40 the 2010 Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy includes a Declaration on Prevention and Promotion and a Framework for Action to Promote Healthy Weights (Curbing Childhood Obesity).

The Government needs to develop national dietary guidelines to help all Azerbaijanis choose healthy and culturally acceptable nutritious food and understand that food and nutrition play a crucial role in a healthy life style, the protection of future generations and chronic disease prevention. The prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women in Azerbaijan is a key contributor to the nearly 1 in 10 children born with low birth weight and an estimated 4.9 per cent of children aged less than five who are underweight.30 That should be considered a public health problem that can be solved with a healthy, diversified diet, without medicalization of the food system.

In particular, government efforts in this area include the provision of subsidies for the engagement in agriculture of youth and women, awareness-raising on the importance of organic agriculture and the Mediterranean diet, the organization of events to discuss the prevention of soil degradation and desertification, and the launch of large events to foster the participation of farmers. Italy should avoid intensifying conventional farming or considering the possibility of genetically modified crops.30 There is a need for a major shift from industrial agriculture to transformative systems such as agroecology that support the local food movement, protect smallholders, respect human rights, food democracy and cultural traditions, and at the same time maintain environmental sustainability and facilitate a healthy diet (A/70/287, para. 87). 65. When Xylella fastidiosa affected olive trees in the region of Apulia, farmers and researchers in the region claimed, unlike the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies, pesticides had been employed in the south to deal with the disease.

One of the components of the PLI is the monetary value of a basic food basket needed by a family allowing access to what is considered a balanced diet, including cereals and cereal products (rice, wheat flour), chicken, eggs and fish, milk, oil and fats, sugar, vegetables and fruits and pulses (food PLI). (...) Nevertheless, there are still pockets of poverty to be tackled, and the obstacles still faced by vulnerable communities in their access to an adequate diet must be removed. 9. During his visit to Sabah, the Special Rapporteur heard testimonies that, as a consequence of ongoing development projects, some of the communities have lost access to traditional lands and sources of livelihood, which has had a negative impact on their diet and physical health. Testimonies also pointed to a lack of meaningful dialogue between authorities and indigenous communities, and these communities do not have access to basic information about the projects in their region and the potential environmental impact.21 This can have a serious effect on the mental health and emotional well-being of indigenous communities owing to uncertainties about the security of their livelihood in the future, which leads to chronic stress and anxiety. 54. (...) During his visit to the Lenggeng Depot, the Special Rapporteur found out that women who have just given birth are held in a separate area where they have mattresses for them and their babies and are provided with the necessary hygienic products. However, their diet does not seem sufficient for breastfeeding mothers as it was reported that they only get two meals per day.
