In low and middle-income countries, children from the poorest households are twice as likely to die from preventable causes before their fifth birthday than children from the richer households. On education, the improvement in access has not been matched by quality. (...) Children now benefit from free health services for children under five, universal free primary education and free day secondary education, better nutrition and improved child protection services. However, children born in different counties have very different chances of survival and access to services.
