The proposal is for a global programme which recognises the efforts by various UN agencies and donors thus far to improve standards in ship recycling nations, and seeks to complement and identify synergies between not only these efforts, but also national initiatives undertaken to improve conditions either directly or indirectly related to ship recycling. (...) Participation in particular activities would be dependent upon the objective and target audience of the individual activity. The active involvement of all relevant stakeholders will be instrumental in securing a commitment to improve the global ship recycling industry in a sustainable way. (...) Development of model facilities Development of model facility(ies) in each of the recipient countries couples both operational and infrastructural improvements in a phased manner, and provides a blueprint for other yards to follow suit.

This call resulted in a program addendum that will leverage an additional $65.0 million in co- financing and target the mitigation or avoidance of 6.5 Mt CO2 eq. 11. The GEF Programming Strategy and investments outlined above are expected to contribute to the target of 1.5 billion tCO2 eq in GHG emission reductions during the GEF-7 period. (...) The cumulative expected emission reductions from GEF-7 approved projects are 1,404.5 Mt CO2 eq, corresponding to 93.7 percent of the GEF-7 GHG emission reduction target. This indicates that the GEF is on track to deliver on the overall GEF-7 CCM target and is supporting countries in mitigating climate change.

These projects contribute to design and planning of integrated urban systems, city-wide energy efficiency improvement and green tourism. All involve local governments and administrations as potential stakeholders and project partners (...) The GEF Council, at its 47th meeting in October 2014, approved an updated Project Cancellation Policy to further improve its project cycle.9 At its 48th meeting in June 2015, the GEF Council approved additional measures to improve the project cycle10 by expediting the preparation of the stock of delayed projects.

The GEF continues to work with its Agencies to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the process to help countries access resources to meet their obligations for non- Annex I Parties. (...)
