Key measures would include: The creation of some 50 million jobs per year for some time ahead to absorb new entrants to the labour market and to make significant progress in absorbing the 200 million or so already unemployed; Overcoming the working poverty of over 800 million workers living with their families on less than US$ 2 a day; Ending hunger and under-nutrition affecting over 800 million today; Extending basic social protection to the over 5 billion people – almost three quarters of the world’s population who lack such protection; Assuring financial inclusion, access to financial services and economic opportunity to the ‘bottom billion’; Giving access to modern forms of energy to the 1.3 billion people still living without electricity; Reducing the often alarming levels of inequality in rich and poor countries alike; and Finding viable solutions for care in developed and some emerging economies with rapidly ageing populations and often stretched public budgets and social security systems.

COVID-19: The multiple and protracted crises impacting labour markets in Arab States- A regional initiative Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ILO in the Arab States has been leading a regional initiative to better understand the impact of the crisis on vulnerable workers, including Syrian refugees and host community members and on enterprises.

  The impact of COVID-19 on enterprises in Jordan: One year into the pandemic

The findings and recommendations were presented during a panel discussion held in Amman on Tuesday (July 13) bringing together representatives of the government and social partners, UN partners and other experts. The panel included discussions with H.E. Ahmad Al Hanandeh, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Hassan Al-Omari, Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Ahmad Shawabkeh, advisor to the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions and economist Jawad Al-Anani. (...) We must continue to work closely with the government and our partners, including the private sector, to promote programmes and responses which address these structural challenges so that businesses and their workers can emerge stronger from the pandemic,” said ILO’s Country Coordinator for Jordan Frida Khan. (...) Based on the findings of the report as well as the programmatic experiences of the ILO and UNDP, recommendations that address the protection of workers and provision of tailored support are outlined. These include promotion of social protection and sustaining minimum wages to protect workers, and Incentivising enterprises to invest in employee training, upskilling and job creation through business scale-up tax breaks and deferrals.
