Mandela, who passed away in early December 2013, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said this sad reality is also a reminder of “Madiba’s” courageous struggle against apartheid and his inspiring victory over the racist forces that had imprisoned him for 27 years.
(...) “Nelson Mandela’s journey from prisoner to President was the triumph of an extraordinary individual against the forces of hate, ignorance and fear — and it was a testimony to the power of courage, reconciliation and forgiveness to overcome the injustice of racial discrimination,” said the UN chief in his message on the Day.
(...) “On this Day, let us acknowledge that racial discrimination remains a dangerous threat and resolve to tackle it through dialogue inspired by the proven ability of individuals to respect, protect and defend our rich diversity as one human family,” he declared.

The implication is that a battle is being fought against the enemy agent and victory will imply the complete vanquishing of the agent. Yet, battles are not chronic: they end in victory for one side and defeat for the other. So far, the history of public health has only one example of a battle won, in the sense of eradicating a disease from the face of the earth: smallpox. (...) Thus, I would suggest that our "victories" may be small and incremental, but the categorization and management of HIV infection as just another chronic illness will certainly take place soon, and this may be the win we will celebrate in the not too distant future.

Yet no single country holds the keys to victory against our invisible enemy.
If we are to defeat COVID-19, achieve a global recovery
and avoid a future pandemic,
then we must work together across borders.
(...) Only a few months ago, before the pandemic struck,
we stood on the brink of a similar victory against polio.
None of these advances would have been possible without this great organisation, the United Nations,
which strives to represent the combined genius and resolve of humanity.
