REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON FREEDOM OF RELIGION OR BELIEF, HEINER BIELEFELDT : ADDENDUM
However, it is difficult to get a clear and comprehensive picture of the religious life beyond those registered religious communities. (...) Decree 92 does not seem to have made the life of the religious or belief communities easier with its extra layer of bureaucratic requirements, although the time frame within which the authorities are required to respond is shorter than before. (...) Concerns were expressed that the forced eviction of the residents of Con Dau would seriously disrupt the cultural and religious life of the community (see A/HRC/27/72, case VNM 3/2014).

ADVANCES IN ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES : BACKGROUND INFORMATION DOCUMENT / SUBMITTED BY THE IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT UNIT
In addition to the chemical synthesis of a genome able to control a bacterial cell (Craig Venter’s artificial life) other important stepping stones include: the engineering of the metabolic pathway in yeast to produce the precursor of an anti-malarial drug;83 the creation of a synthetic mammalian gene circuit that revealed anti-tuberculosis compounds;84 a demonstration of distributed biological computation; and the engineering of an E. coli to sense and kill a human pathogen.85 14. (...) Laboratories are becoming increasingly digitized.136 This has helped extract information that was previously obscured and has made it easier and quicker to accomplish certain tasks. Increasingly the life sciences are referred to as information sciences. (...) Some of this software makes it easier to visualise complex biological information, including: genome sequence data: sequence assembly data; plasmid maps; gene expression; comparative and functional genomic data; transcription; secondary structure of RNA;159 and biochemical networks. 160 29.

REPORT OF THE MEETING OF EXPERTS
S 13/8 AM United States The WHO/WIPO/WTO report underscores that facilitating international ex- change in the life sciences is a complex matter. The private sector plays a tre- mendous role in ensuring both innovation and access, and governments can support or hinder through practices such as import tariffs or failures to uphold intellectual property rights. (...) WP.17 Iran (NAM) In light of rapid developments in the life sciences, there is a need to strengthen cooperation among States Parties in order to bridge the ever increasing gaps in the fields of biotechnology, genetic engineering, microbiology and other re- lated areas between
developed and developing countries. (...) S 13/8 AM Iran (NAM) The sharing of results of advanced research in life sciences is especially impor- tant for the scientists, engineers, students and teachers in developing countries to take full advantage of new developments in biological sciences and technol- ogy.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “GLOBAL BIOSECURITY CHALLENGES. PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS”, SOCHI, 20-21 JUNE 2019 - SUBMITTED BY THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
However, some core issues pervaded all presentations, such as the rapid pace of scientific BWC/MSP/2019/MX.5/WP.3 8 and technological developments in the area of Life Sciences, on the one hand, and the lack of institutions and regulations, on the other. 14. (...) It makes it possible for a broader group of actors with fewer resources and less tacit knowledge to produce and engineer pathogens and other biological agents. It is easier to read, write, and edit DNA and RNA. It’s also easier to generate pathogens from scratch or modify pathogen virulence, transmissibility, and susceptibility to medical countermeasures. (...) It was emphasized that previous experience demonstrated that codes of conduct would be effective only if the life science community were engaged, and active learning practices were required to obtain that engagement.

LETTER DATED 2007/02/13 FROM THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND TO THE CONFERENCE ON DISARMAMENT ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE CONFERENCE TRANSMITTING A WHITE PAPER ENTITLED "THE FUTURE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM'S NUCLEAR DETERRENT" OF DECEMBER 2006
The first of four Royal Navy Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines (or SSBNs), which carry the Trident D5 missile, was launched in 1992 and the class had an original design life of 25 years. We have undertaken detailed work to assess the scope for extending the life of those submarines. (...) The US Government plans to extend the life of the Trident D5 missile to around 2042 to match the life of their Ohio-class submarines. (...) We have concluded that, if we are to maintain unbroken deterrent capability at the end of the life of the Vanguard-class submarines, we need to take decisions now on whether to replace those submarines and whether to participate in the Trident D5 life extension programme.

A PRELIMINARY FRAMEWORK DRAFT OF PRINCIPLES AND GUIDELINES CONCERNING HUMAN RIGHTS AND TERRORISM : WORKING PAPER / PREPARED BY KALLIOPI KOUFA, SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON TERRORISM AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Her hope has been that with the conclusion of her conception study, the necessary chore of measuring up counter-terrorism measures for compatibility would be substantially easier. In this light, in the course of her study she paid particular attention to those issues relating to human rights and terrorism that presented the most difficulties (distinguishing terrorists from combatants, for example), as lack of either precision or understanding in those areas would make the task of developing guidelines factious, frustrating, and perhaps ultimately fruitless. 3. (...) Penalties for convicted terrorists shall conform with all international and national rules, especially those relating to the death penalty and life sentences without possibility of parole.
