A further revision of the life insurance programme, currently under preparation, will be announced next year under which the waiver option will no longer be available.

Life insurance premium reduction
1. (...) The current premium rate of $0.30 per $1,000 of coverage, equivalent to .09 per cent of pensionable remuneration, will be reduced to $0.26 per $1,000 of coverage, which is equivalent to .078 per cent of pensionable remuneration.**
2. The Aetna Life Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut, United States of America, which underwrites the United Nations group life insurance plan, has declared a 5 per cent reduction, while the remaining 10 per cent reduction will be financed from United Nations-held life insurance reserves. All other provisions with respect to the United Nations group life insurance programme set out in ST/IC/2002/63 remain in force, in addition to the related life insurance administrative instruction, ST/AI/2002/6.

Before your SLWOP
As a staff member, you have the option of maintaining your existing health and life insurance coverage during a special leave without pay (SLWOP) period provided you pay the full premium (i.e., your contribution plus the organizations’ subsidy) in advance of the coverage period. For instance, if you were covered under Empire Blue Cross and Cigna Dental for medical and dental coverage respectively but elected to enroll in Cigna International for the duration of your SLWOP, you will only be eligible to enroll in Empire Blue Cross and Cigna Dental upon your return.
For life insurance coverage, you need to submit a life insurance application along with an Evidence of Insurability (EOI) questionnaire if you suspend your life insurance coverage during the SLWOP period. (...) Whom to inform about your Special Leave Without Pay
