Now, we are testing the use of AI for steps of the volunteer mobilization process, as part of the UVP. UNV fills thousands of new UN Volunteer assignments annually. (...) UNV is currently finalizing the integration of artificial intelligence talent API and associated machine learning. Last year was a remarkable year for UNV in terms of gender equality and women’s empowerment. (...) In our collaboration, we have agreed which processes need to remain in the hands of humans who observe unbiased and fair selection principles, and which can be automated for efficiency gains. -- Avetis Avagyan, Digital Transformation Project Manager The current controls UNV has established include: removing all gender-identifying data (“protected attributes”) from the datasets which are subject to Machine Learning; ensuring that short-listing and final candidate selection remains in the hands of humans, who observe unbiased and fair selection principles; excluding exceptional decisions from Machine Learning, as consistency in application of procedures is important to avoid confusion; hiding photos of candidates on the Unified Volunteering Platform; applying gender-neutral language on the platform by observing UN Globe recommendations on gender-inclusive language; developing real-time reports on inclusiveness and fairness in AI and overall recruitment through business intelligence; and monitoring relevant key performance indicators throughout.

What is happening behind the scenes in machine learning (ML), robotics and digitization, to name a few, is incredibly complex and difficult. (...) Some 2.5 million new engineers are needed in Sub-Saharan Africa to achieve SDG6 (Water and Sanitation) and there will not be enough people to fill this need. Beyond increasing the proportion of diverse developers and experts, ensuring meaningful engagement with the affected communities is also needed to challenge the imposition of top-down technological solutions. (...) This is highly relevant for the world of frontier technology, which is filled with developers, enthusiasts and experts who are mostly men from developed economies that seem to outnumber not only women, but also other diverse populations.

A lifecycle study found that in contrast to a high production scenario, printing just one part a week and leaving the machine on the rest of the time, had roughly ten times the impact per part compared to using the same machine at maximum utilization. (...) Energy impacts depend on the machine design. The following factors can have an influence on 3D printing energy impacts in an industrial environment: – Build volume: This will determine the number of parts that can be printed simultaneously on a specific printer. (...) Recent studies have found that 3D printed metal parts can be up to 50% lighter than machined parts and result in carbon savings in the aeronautical parts-use stage equalling "three to four orders of magnitude more" than the amount of CO2 emitted to make them.
