Strategic discussion on CPF membership The secretariat provided background information on CPF membership, outlining the International Arrangement on Forests and the CPF, the CPF Policy Document and its guidance on CPF membership, discussions and results of the past membership review, recent discussions on membership, and key points for discussion. Members held a discussion on key issues on CPF membership and possible next steps to be taken. Members agreed to consider and address CPF membership issues based on the decision on the IAF midterm review to be made in 2024. (...) Other main ideas and suggestions included: clarification regarding possible modalities of collaboration to engage non-CPF partners in the CPF activities; need for concrete membership criteria and principles; transparency in the membership application process; and connection between membership review and the overall work of the IAF and the needs of the CPF, including the size and scope of the membership.

In a letter dated 10 December 1992, its Permanent Representative informed the Secretary-General that the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic would cease to exist on 31 December 1992 and that the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, as successor States, would apply for membership in the United Nations. Following the receipt of their application, the Security Council, on 8 January 1993, recommended to the General Assembly that the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic be both admitted to United Nations membership. Article 4 Membership in the United Nations is open to all other peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations. The admission of any such state to membership in the United Nations will be effected by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. Article 5 A Member of the United Nations against which preventive or enforcement action has been taken by the Security Council may be suspended from the exercise of the rights and privileges of membership by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
