Peru park’s biodiversity at risk from illegal mining, drug production
Illegal logging and cocaine production and trafficking have for years blighted Bahuaja-Sonene National Park in the Peruvian Amazon.
If the locations of illegal activities were marked on a map, the magnitude of the illegal mining and drug-trafficking problems in Peru’s Bahuaja-Sonene National Park would be obvious.
The natural protected area covers 10,900 square kilometers (4,200 square miles) and mainly includes the rainforests of the Puno region in southern Peru, as well as the southern part of the Madre de Dios region.
(...) Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Bahuaja-Sonene National Park has the world’s highest amount of illegally cultivated coca within a protected area: 118 hectares (290 acres) are growing within the park.

Although the role, relevance and applicability of parks vary according to specific national, regional and local contexts, it is generally accepted that parks have the potential to be a dynamic tool for accelerating economic growth and raising competitiveness, and function as hubs for creating, disseminating and applying industrial knowledge and stimulating innovation. With the potential to generate or strengthen comparative and competitive advantages, to help remove the binding constraints for development, and to test new reforms and policies, parks can be powerful tools for regional and national development. (...) These initiatives should also be featured in national plans for research and innovation, thus reflecting the importance of parks in innovation policy.

PRODUCE and UNIDO present guidelines for Peru's national industrial park strategy
LIMA, 11 December 2018 - Inaugurated by Peru's Vice Minister of SMEs and Industry, Javier Dávila, and by UNIDO’s Programme for Country Partnership (PCP) Peru Coordinator, Petra Schwager, a two-day consultation process allowed for the Peruvian Ministry of Production, through the National Productive Diversification Programme (PNDP), to present the guidelines for the formulation of the National Strategy for the Development of Industrial Parks that aims at promoting industrial development.
Developed by PRODUCE and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the national strategy for industrial parks seeks to foster suitable conditions to mobilize resources and attract investments in modern, inclusive and environmentally sound industrial parks.
(...) The guidelines further recommend three types of parks: value-added parks for small- and medium-sized enterprises; industrial parks based on private public partnership; and modern special economic zones.

Eco-industrial parks
One of UNIDO’s contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals is through its facilitation of eco-industrial parks.
(...) Among their many benefits, eco-industrial parks promote resource efficiency and circular economy practices, also helping to bridge the gap between cities and industries by making a significant contribution to sustainable cities.
UNIDO collaborates with the World Bank and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to promote the global development of standardized approaches for the implementation of eco-industrial parks.
