REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON TORTURE AND OTHER CRUEL, INHUMAN OR DEGRADING TREATMENT OR PUNISHMENT, MANFRED NOWAK :ADDENDUM
The Special Rapporteur was invited by the Government of Denmark to undertake a visit to the country. He conducted his mission to Denmark, including the self-governing province of Greenland, from 2 to 9 May 2008.1 Due to time constraints he did not pay a visit to the other self-governing province of the Faroe Islands. The purpose of the visit was to assess the situation of torture and ill-treatment, including conditions of detention; and intensify cooperation with the Government in the fight against torture. 2. She is also very grateful for the valuable assistance given by the numerous non-governmental organizations that played a crucial role in facilitating her visit. 3. The Special Rapporteur deeply deplores the killing of two witnesses she interviewed during her visit. (...) The Special Rapporteur also made a brief visit to an academy for police training. In Maraba, she met with a public prosecutor. 9. (...) Thanks to the full cooperation of the Government of Brazil, the Special Rapporteur was able to complete her visit in a climate of total transparency. The visit was widely covered by the media and it appeared that there was growing concern and awareness about the issues covered by the Special Rapporteur’s mandate.
