Improving the quality of children’s diets in schools and beyond UNICEF supports countries in developing guidance for nutritious and safe school meals, and advocates for the use of fortified foods in schools where nutrient-poor diets are common. To improve the quality of children’s diets, we support large-scale food fortification programmes – such as salt iodization  and the fortification of wheat flour, rice, and cooking oil with vitamins and nutrients. (...) Providing micronutrient supplementation and deworming UNICEF supports micronutrient supplementation policies and programmes for school-age children and adolescents – such as iron and folic acid supplementation – in settings where nutrient-poor diets are common. We also support deworming prophylaxis to prevent intestinal worm infections in children and adolescents.

He needs to start eating solid foods in addition to breastmilk to keep up with his growing needs.  (...) Don't wait too long to start solid food Your baby’s body needs the extra energy and nutrients to help him to keep growing. This kind of food is cheaper, and easier to access and prepare than fresh food, particularly for poor people in urban areas," Graziano said, noting that when resources for food become scarce, people choose less expensive foods that are often high in caloric density and low in nutrients. The consumption of these cheap foods comes however, at a high cost to society with obesity a risk factor for many non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes  and some cancers.
