As a child a slimy okra stew was like a bowl of snotty porridge. When I started Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen I looked for new ways to incorporate okra into dishes, one being Okra tempura. (...) In one of the sites in Diarb Balout in Palestine, there are one thousand dunums of snake cucumber and okra crops, where women are the only field workers working there. (...) Results show that using the traditional methods (in control), 550 kg of crop was extracted from one dunum, however, using the FAO introduced method implemented within the FFS, 2 000 kg was extracted from one dunum, which is almost three times as much.

Barely a month after the land was rented, cheerful sprigs of okra, gourd, cucumber and beans were stretching toward the gentle spring sun.  (...) “We had never seen an okra harvest barely 26 days after planting,” says another villager, Amr Shee. “Usually, it takes at least 40 days before the harvest begins, and here we are selling okra 15 days ahead of the schedule!” The return has also been good –the villagers were able to earn 69 Rupees (US$0.7) a kilogram of okra.
