INTERSESSIONAL WORK ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS
Para apoyar la labor que realiza el grupo de coordinación mundial con el fin de aplicar el plan
de vigilancia mundial respecto de cuestiones tales como el transporte a larga distancia y los efectos de
la variación del clima en las tendencias observadas de contaminantes orgánicos persistentes (COP),
como se disponía en la decisión SC-4/31, un grupo de expertos convocado por la Secretaría preparó un
informe titulado “Climate change and POPs: predicting the impacts”1 (El cambio climático y los COP:
predicción de las consecuencias).

importante que los encargados de adoptar decisiones estudien y difundan información sobre posibles actividades de
mitigación y los cobeneficios de la gestión de los COP, otros contaminantes y el cambio climático de manera

PROPOSAL FOR AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR THE CLARION-CLIPPERTON ZONE : NOTE / BY THE SECRETARIAT
La justificación completa utilizada por el seminario para las zonas propuestas
figura en el documento ISBA/14/LTC/2, pero se resume a continuación:
a) La delimitación y el establecimiento de las zonas deben encuadrarse en el
marco jurídico vigente de la Autoridad Internacional de los Fondos Marinos relativo
a la ordenación de las actividades mineras en los fondos oceánicos y la protección
del medio marino;
b) En el diseño del sistema se debe dar cabida a los intereses de todas las
partes interesadas;
c) Las zonas deben establecerse lo antes posible, de modo que en las
estrategias mineras y la delimitación de futuras áreas objeto de concesión puedan
incorporarse principios de ordenación sólidos y basados en los ecosistemas;
d) El sistema de zonas se debe concebir para promover los siguientes
objetivos de preservación:
i) Preservar hábitats marinos representativos y únicos;
