Micro and small businesses - which make up the majority of private enterprises in the Jordanian economy - are hardest hit, according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Fafo Institute for Labour and Social Research (FAFO). (...) We must continue to work closely with the government and our partners, including the private sector, to promote programmes and responses which address these structural challenges so that businesses and their workers can emerge stronger from the pandemic,” said ILO’s Country Coordinator for Jordan Frida Khan. (...) The report also highlighted the need for tailored support to micro, small and medium enterprises and stronger public-private dialogue to ensure response measures meet the needs of the private sector.

The Kurdistan Region of Iraq’s social security scheme for private sector workers is based on the Social Security Law No. 39 of 1971, but with some independent amendments. (...) The draft law is intended to replace the current Social Security Law and if passed, the draft law will bring in several changes including achieving a wider coverage of workers in the private, mixed and cooperative economy and also of those active in the informal economy. (...) “Strengthening the draft social security and pension law according to international standards is to guarantee the rights of workers in the private sector." The workshop is part of broader efforts, supported by the European Union, to reform social protection in the country, being implement by the ILO, UNICEF, WFP and the Government of Iraq.

A mismatch between jobs being created and the skills of the labour force : the unemployment rate for the college educated rose from 14 per cent in 2005 to close to 22 per cent in 2009, while it fell for those with no education during the same period. Low private investment: Despite growing profit rates, investment was on a downward trend –between 1990 and 2007, private investment as a per cent of GDP declined by 1.2 percentage points. (...) Among the additional measures called for at the event were the need to break from the old patterns of development by encouraging broader based private investment and stronger and more sustainable job creation through innovative policies that move the country up the technological scale and take into consideration Tunisia’s skilled labour force.
