It involved original cataloguing of seme material hitherto not recorded in the main catalogues, reclassification into one scheme of material previously dispersed under three different classifications, the transfer of some material to and from the Trusteeship collection and the withdrawal of a mass of duplicated and superseded publications. A revision of the public catalogue was also carried out in the course of the year; 120 drawers were added, bringing the total number to 87O, and a complete rearrangement of the shelf list was also undertaken.

As an outcome of this review of policy and pro­ cedures the following decisions were taken: a fuller and more precise definition of the Library's criteria of selection is to be written to serve as a guide for al l concerned in selection activity; the list of subjects of interest to the United Nations will be thoroughly revised and brought up to date; these basic documents are to be supplemented as necessary by the publication of specific directives relating to collecting policy; initial selection from definitely assigned national and trade bibliographies, catalogues and announcements is to be made by the chiefs of the Processing Section and the Acquisition Unit, and from certain language areas by desig­ nated staff members; these selections will continue to be reviewed by the Director or the Chief of the Service to Headers Unit or their delegates; certain acquisition sources (such as rare book catalogues) are to be examined by the Director for possible purchases; special bibliographies and Journals are to be scanned regularly as acquisition sources by designated staff members with particular language and subject backgrounds. The Unit also published throughout 1950-51 a monthly list, New Publications in the United Nations Headquarters Library, which has been found to be of considerable interest to the Secretariat. 1 The most pressing unfinished piece of work on the operational level is to reconcile the author entries in the serial checking record with those in the catalogue, and in so doing to weed the file of records which are no longer active. The library of the Department of Trusteeship and Information from Non-Self-Governing Territories receives many serials directly which must be recorded in the Headquarters Library as time can be found for the task. Publications concerning the territories Aden through Dominica have been catalogued, as well as the administering powers' reports on non-self-governing territories and trust territories, but this represents only 20 per cent of the total task.

The Catalogue offers both browsing and searching functionality. (...) All SGA Network member assessments were added to the Catalogue and most entries into the Catalogue have been peer-reviewed. (...) The Catalogue could support and complement the planned Catalogue of Policy Support Tools and Methodologies (deliverable 4c).

A similar situation obtains in the Catalogue Section. Here the workloa in 1961 was at about the level of i960, despite the fact that the acquisition of new publications was deliberately held to a reasonable minimum. (...) New or revised directives and. instructions on the maintenance of the bibliographical collection, exchange of publications with other institutions, subject cataloguing, loan services, and on other aspects of library service have been issued.. French and Spanish versions of the Bibliographical style manual were published; ten chapters of the Manual of the Catalogue Section were revised, and reproduced; a new, updated edition of the List of subject headings used in indexing United Nations documents and publications was prepared. 7. As part of the new equipment installed in the Dag Hammarskjold Library the Catalogue Section acquired two Flexowriters which make it possible to reproduce catalogue cards within the Section with consequent elimination of the lag between the actual cataloguing of a book and the filing of cards in the public catalogue which had long been an annoyance.
