FAO survey reveals key action areas for UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration | The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism | Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO.org english français The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism Background Our work News and Events Resources Communities Knowledge Base Partners News Events FAO survey reveals key action areas for UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 25/01/2022 25 January 2022, Rome – A FAO-led global capacity needs assessment has identified key priority areas to achieve and sustain restoration goals at scale and support the United Nations (UN) Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030 . (...) According to the results of the global assessment, entitled “ Key gaps and capacity priorities for restoration to support the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030 ”, strengthening financing, stakeholder engagement, technical capacities, and the development of supportive policies will be vital for restoration success. (...) Engaging with sectors and actors, such as mining, energy and fisheries, international development partners, land users and underrepresented groups including women, Indigenous peoples and youth is also critical for restoration activities, according to the report. It also underlined the need to enhance technical capacities across stakeholder groups and through all phases of ecosystem restoration activities, as well as the importance of relevant policies that foster effective and inclusive ecosystem restoration.

DRIP is now embedded in the Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM), and aims at enabling country reporting, measuring restoration efforts and supporting the broader ambitions of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration of preventing, halting and reversing the degradation of ecosystems worldwide. (...) Following the estimation that, on average, the benefits of restoration are 10 times higher than the costs, this tool aims to facilitate the undeniable truth that, if properly managed and restored, Dryland forests and trees can help tackle global challenges such as poverty, hunger and climate change. (...) The objective is to inform the development of resource-efficient and fit-for-purpose monitoring systems that generates quality data and information and supports domestic restoration needs and other reporting processes with strong ownership by governments, and restoration stakeholders.

A myriad of national and local governments, non-profit organizations, actors from the private sector and local communities are ramping up efforts to plan, execute and monitor large-scale restoration. The Bonn Challenge, New York Declaration on Forests, the prominence of forest restoration in Nationally Determined Contributions, National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and REDD+ strategies of many countries demonstrate such global commitment to restoration. In addition, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) aims to accelerate and scale up existing restoration efforts to restore degraded ecosystems as a proven measure to fight the climate crisis and enhance food security, water supply and biodiversity. (...) ANR encompasses a range of restoration interventions that can help achieve different goals of restoration and related policy objectives.

Strengthen efforts to identify degraded lands/ecosystems within our respective countries; 2. Work to restore and afforest degraded lands/ecosystems by 2030 through inter alia, but not limited to, sustainable forest management taking into account existing national efforts as well as initiatives already outlined in the relevant policy documents; 3.
