While evaluating the potential for income generation through agriculture work, Asllan’s family was selected to be one of the beneficiaries of “Improving the family capabilities to respond to emergencies” project.  20 orange saplings, 20 tangerine saplings, 20 pears, and 5 olives- were made available by the project to Asllan’s family. (...) Evaluating the agricultural potential of families, 200 orange saplings, 200 tangerine saplings, 140 pear saplings, 80 olive saplings, and 24 lemon saplings were donated to 11 other families, which they planted on their own land. To create the basis of a sustainable economy, these families have also been supported with other agricultural inputs such as sprinkling pumps, milking machines, grass mowers, and electric mills.  50 other families have been supported with agricultural and animal husbandry inputs such as fruit saplings, goats, irrigation pumps, etc., while 65 other families have been supported with food and hygiene packages.  65 small farmers and individuals have been trained on how to draft a Business Plan, how to manage their farms, and how to find a market for their products.

The projects undertaken by them include the planting of 2,000 tree saplings and a two-month garbage cleaning drive in a girls’ school leading to the installation of garbage pits by the school authorities. By Sylvia Nabanoba and Vanessa Zola in Kosti, Sudan A thick rubber pipe snakes its way from Sudan’s White Nile River for over two kilometres, pumping its contents into a large reservoir in Al Jabalain locality, where thousands of saplings are growing.The tree nursery has a capacity to produce 200,000 saplings a year – the fruit of a partnership between the country’s forestry body, the Forests National Corporation (FNC), and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. In a bid to give the saplings a better chance at taking root, UNHCR and FNC, in partnership with Innovation Norway, a development agency of the Norwegian government, and the Dutch Land Life Company, are experimenting with growing them in cocoons in the tree nursery where Nyakong works. A cocoon is a biodegradable ‘incubator’ designed to support a sapling through its critical first year by providing water and shelter while stimulating a healthy and deep root structure, tapping into the water supply beneath the surface.

The most recent attacks occurred yesterday, when Israeli settlers uprooted over 600 recently planted olive and almond saplings in the village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah in the West Bank. It should be noted that the saplings were planted by the International Committee of the Red Cross to support Palestinian farmers and would have benefited more than 70 families.

HAF has planted 3.5 million fruit trees (2 million since 2014) in 23 provinces and is planting 1 million fruit seeds of eight different tree varieties during the 2021 season. The saplings are raised and then distributed to farming communities. The sapling varieties grown at HAF’s nurseries include almond, argan, carob, cherry, fig, lemon, pomegranate, and walnut. (...) As such, all of HAF nurseries, which are co-managed by local associations, cooperatives, and education centers, are irrigated with pressure drip systems and solar pumps, which not only supply water to growing saplings, they also save on average $60 per month in electricity costs.
