On Sunday, 28 October 1984, a bus carrying Palestinian workers and shoppers was attacked in Jerusalem, with an Israeli army-issue 66-millimetre rocket launcher.

It will be recalled that the Mahane Yehuda open market in Jerusalem has been repeatedly subjected to terrorist atrocities over the years, the purpose being to cause havoc and indiscriminate murder among shoppers, consisting mainly of women and children going about their daily chores.

Thus, in the wake of a Pu) terrorist attack on a civilian crowd of shoppers in downtown Jerusalem, on 29 February 1984, that “‘moderate” PLO terrorist chief praised the cold-blooded act of terrorism as an act of heroism (see my letter of 29 February lY84, document S/16377).

(a) Also on the same morning an explosive device planted in the upper shelf of a grocery store went off in Pars-Katz, a suburb east of Tel Aviv, seriously nounding~a pregnant female shopper and also injuring another customer as well as the grocer.

In accordance with its cowardly practice, the terrorist PLO deliberately left -the device in a busy mid-town street set to explode at a time when the crowds of shoppers were at their largest. Among those seriously in5urecl were an infant aged ten months, a two-year old boy and five women.

On 24 September 1984 a large explosive device was discovered in a supermarket in the Jerusalem suburb of Ramat Eshkol. Alerted by a shopper, police sappers successfully dismantled the bomb, set to explode soon thereafter.

Here are two examples in the last month alone that illustrate the PLO’s unrestricted policy of murder1 On 13 vember 1985 a bomb exploded in a Haifa market crowded with shoppers. The P’LO claimed responsibility over Baghdad radio. On 25 November 1985 Baruch Jahan wae stabbed while shopping in Jerusalem, the third such stabbing in three weeks, (Significantly, the PI leader Abu J ihad told the Gulf daily Al-Bayan_ on 18 Kovember 1985 “that stabbing and strangulation are part of the armed struggle”.)

Providentially, despite the lethal contents of the bombs, the blasts did not injure any of the nu"@r~"s shoppers, many of whom were women. However, a police sapper was wounded by the explosion of one of the devices.
