Flood victims in East Africa hit by Rift Valley fever epidemic

Flood victims in East Africa hit by Rift Valley fever epidemic
The people and livestock of Northeastern Province of Kenya and neighbouring Somalia have been severely hit by a complex epidemic of disease which broke out in December 1997. (...) Prediction of RVF epidemics is the best form of prevention
Effective containment of the current epidemic, given the limitations of available vaccines and the conditions in the country - where heavy rains have started again after a lull in December and many areas are simply unreachable - is almost impossible. Experts consider that vaccination in the face of established RVF epidemics has usually been applied too late to avert them or prevent considerable losses from occurring.

Mr Chairman,
As we have underlined ever since the current financial crisis hit so many of our countries, the
member states of the European Union continue to face a difficult economic climate as do most
member states. (...) We echo the view of ACABQ that we need to go beyond incremental
budgeting, an approach that simply leads to automatic budget growth. We all agree that the UN
needs to deliver the mandates the member states have entrusted it with. (...) Business as
usual may be convenient but, in the face of the financial challenges the UN is confronted with
today, it is simply no longer an option.
We look forward to discussing these important issues constructively with all partners, with a
view to reaching a consensus on much needed improvements that would enable this Organisation
to deliver its mandates more efficiently.

While on Mataso Island responding to reports of illness and injury, WHO Medical Officer Dr Rufina Latu came to the aid of a woman who was critically injured as her house had collapsed around her when Cyclone Pam hit in the early hours of Saturday, 15 March.
Her case is one example of what many people in Vanuatu have endured following the most powerful cyclone to sweep through the Pacific region in over a decade.
(...) Houses all over my village were simply blown away. In a flash, a lifetime of possessions were just gone.”
(...) As the island's small clinic was demolished in the storm, no medical support was available and there was no way for her to reach another island or call for help. Mrs Merick simply had to wait in a makeshift shelter cobbled together out of debris left in the cyclone's wake.
