VISIT TO BRAZIL :REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE IMPLICATIONS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS OF THE ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND WASTES
Studies reveal multiple cases of health problems, including cough, shortness of breath and wheezing and headaches. 23 Sixty-five per cent of community members reported respiratory problems, with others suffering from ophthalmological diseases and various skin conditions, aggravated by the pollution.24 Community members have been burned from the slag and residues from pig iron, in areas where the waste area was not properly fenced off and there was no proper signalling of danger and the risks associated with contact with the pig iron.25 Despite unmistakably hazardous pollution, data provided to the Government by the companies does not suggest that it is above levels of concern.

REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON TORTURE AND OTHER CRUEL, INHUMAN OR DEGRADING TREATMENT OR PUNISHMENT, MANFRED NOWAK :ADDENDUM
(2) A violation of this Act shall be considered to have been committed by torture if it was committed in the performance of Danish, foreign or international public service or duty by inflicting harm on the body or health of another or causing severe physical or mental pain or suffering to another (1) For the purpose of obtaining information or a confession from another, (2) For the purpose of punishing or frightening another or forcing another to do, suffer or omit an act or (3) Due to the subject’s political belief, gender, race, skin colour, national or ethnic origin, religious belief or sexual inclination.” (...) Since 2006, the costs for the rehabilitation of torture victims by RCT in Denmark have been covered by the Danish health-care system. Denmark has a “free choice hospital act”, which allows patients to choose the hospital or institution at which they wish to receive their treatment. (...) One particularly impressive area which the Special Rapporteur wishes to highlight are the Government’s efforts, together with civil society, to aid and encourage contact between prisoners and their children by establishing a child-friendly environment within detention facilities.16 He notes that children of convicted prisoners up to 3 may live with their mother or father in prison, provided that he or she is capable of taking care of the child (e.g. Horserød State Prison).17 Engelsborg Prison has a family house with five flats where inmates may stay together with their partner and children of up to 15 years of age. 32.

REPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT EXPERT ON MINORITY ISSUES : ADDENDUM
There was also a strong sense of skin colour bias, as highlanders demonstrated racist attitudes and used derogatory names toward Anuaks, Nuers and others. (...) Numerous consultations established that certain ethnic groups are more commonly subjected to discrimination and exclusion, both on the interpersonal and institutional levels, based on skin colour and other physical features. Reportedly, derogatory terms such as “slave”, are commonly used in reference to certain ethnic groups, alluding to their historic dominance by other groups, and patterns of exploitation during the slave trade.

THE RIGHT TO FOOD : REPORT OF THE SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE RIGHT TO FOOD, JEAN ZIEGLER : ADDENDUM
In Guatemala City, the Special Rapporteur visited Bethania, a legalized slum where people were living in overcrowded shacks of tin and plastic, without sanitation, and where doctors in the local health centre estimated that at least 20 per cent of the children were suffering from malnourishment and more from diarrhoea, skin and fungal diseases. Many think that the high rates of criminality, violence and murder in Guatemala City are closely linked to extreme poverty and social exclusion. (...) Access to health centres for the treatment of malnutrition and related diseases also remains problematic, although the Special Rapporteur was impressed to meet with Cuban doctors in the health centres, where vaccination and care is offered free of charge, and learned that approximately 700 Cuban doctors staff over 100 public health centres, mostly in the highlands and vulnerable urban communities, while over 600 Guatemalans are studying medicine on scholarship at Cuban universities.
