Gbedemah applauding the State party’s major achievements in the area of education, said that lack of access to affordable sanitary towels contributed to school dropout among girls. She wondered when taxes on sanitary towels would be removed and interventions put in place to improve their affordability and accessibility, particularly in rural areas. (...) Nakafeero (Uganda), speaking via video link, said that taxes on disposable sanitary towels had been waived in the 2018/19 financial year, and students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, were taught to make reusable sanitary towels.

In terms of materials to manage menstruation at school, it was clear that in both regions, girls generally use pieces of cloth produced locally or sanitary towels purchased at the local market. Drying the pieces of cloth used as sanitary protection poses a problem, as according to local traditions no one must see evidence of a woman's menses. (...) Girls also have a problem accessing sanitary towels, due to the relatively high cost of these supplies. (...) The same applies to waste bins for appropriate disposal of sanitary towels. As regards to hygiene, handwashing devices and materials for anal cleansing were underdeveloped in the educational institutions visited.
