Keisha Aniya McGuire, Chair of the Special Committee on Decolonization at the Management Segment of ECOSOC, on 21 July 2020, under agenda item 14 entitled “Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples by the specialized agencies and the international institutions associated with the United Nations” Mr. (...) It should be underlined that the General Assembly has called on the specialized agencies and other organizations of the United Nations system and regional organizations to intensify their engagement with the work of the Special Committee including participation in the regional seminars on decolonization. (...) It stresses the special challenges faced by small island Territories in planning for and implementing sustainable development, and that they will be constrained in meeting those challenges without the continuing cooperation and assistance of the specialized agencies and other organizations of the UN system.

I am elated to participate in-person in this session, that addresses the development challenges that are specific to Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), collectively known as countries in special situations or with special needs. 2. In my dual capacity as President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Chair of the Group of LLDCs, I fully support all initiatives aimed at addressing the special needs of LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS. 3 3. (...) As we embark on economic recovery and build back better, it is concerning that many of the countries in special situations are experiencing the slowest growth rates. 11. (...) More funding is required to address the adverse impacts of climate change in countries in special situations. 9 25. Countries in special situations should be supported to leverage new sources of financing.

It gives a comprehensive overview of the activities undertaken by special procedures in the reporting period, both individually and as a system, including country visits, communications, thematic reports, follow-up activities, joint actions, development of international standards and advocacy.
