This declaration shall reaffirm the political commitment to accelerate the implementation of SDG 14, highlighting that 4 of its targets are to be reached in 2020.
As per the provisions of resolution 73/292, and in answer to your second guiding question, the declaration shall also reaffirm the need to reinforce the science-policy interface at all levels and encourage partnerships, in particular in the areas to be identified through your first guiding question.
(...) The link between Ocean and climate change is directly linked to target 14.3 on ocean acidification. It can also be considered under target 14.2, in particular because of the adverse effects of climate change on ecosystems resilience and because of the socioeconomics impacts of climate change.
In addition, there are many areas of action where science and innovation have a direct role in the implementation of SDG 14:
- For target 14.1, for example, we can think of the techniques to recycle and treat plastics and of the techniques and infrastructures to prevent wastewater pollution.
- For target 14.5, science can indicate the areas requiring protection in order to establish a well- connected network of marine protected areas, as well as the appropriate measures to protect the species and ecosystems that need it the most.
- For target 14.4, new technological tools can be used to monitor and fight IUU fishing for example.
