Analysis in these markets has shown that LEDs are approximately 50% less expensive to own and operate than a CFL. The examples below show the cost-effectiveness of LEDs compared with other lighting in South Africa and Uganda. (...) Finally, it should be noted that while some LED lamps can be purchased at US$1.00 per lamp, some of the better-quality ones are more expensive, costing two or three times as much. The prices used for our examples above were US$2.20-$3.00. (...) Replacement lamps also offer labor cost savings due to their longer life spans, typically twice that of LFLs. The short payback periods for LED replacement lamps are typically a key feature advertised by manufacturers, along with other benefits associated with LED lighting (Dansk Supermarked8, Denmark and Verhoef Access Technology9, The Netherlands).

Typically recruited with the promise of lucrative earnings, women are often kept in the sex industry through a system of debt bondage, which can be described as a vicious circle of exploitation.

It is estimated that approximately 60 per cent of the residents of Ulaanbaatar live in ger districts, so named because families there typically live in gers, rather than houses or apartments.10 The residents of the ger districts burn coal and other solid fuels for warmth, which greatly contributes to air pollution, especially in winter. (...) When herders move to cities, they typically continue to live in their gers, which have poor insulation and inadequate connections to electric and other utility services. (...) A comprehensive assessment of the needs for each site is typically not conducted, and the Special Rapporteur was informed by interlocutors both within and outside the mining industry that, in practice, reclamation often involves only filling in open pits or is simply not conducted at all.
