According to the Elections Act 2008, Sudan will enter its second election session in 2015 having its first round in April 2010. The upcoming round represents a good opportunity for peaceful conveyance of power. (...) In view of the above, the SSC within the context of its project on consolidating the culture of elections, peaceful devolution of power and public consultation on the upcoming permanent constitution, held a number of workshops and symposia to evaluate the experience of the 2010 elections, discuss the challenges and entitlements of the upcoming elections and the roles of civil society and woman therein in order to prepare the political arena for the coming elections as an appropriate and constitutional means for power devolution and democratic practice in general. (...) In this regard, we commend the early preparations and arrangements made by the Commission in setting a time schedule for the upcoming elections which give a positive and encouraging indication to the political parties and forces for early engagement in the electoral process.

According to the Secretariat’s estimate, the recommendations would entail for the United Nations an estimated increase of $4,254,100 for the programme budget of the United Nations for the remainder of the biennium 2018–2019, as well as for the upcoming proposed programme budget for the year 2020. According to the Secretariat’s estimate, the introduction of the grant would entail for the United Nations an estimated increase of $2,242,900 for the programme budget of the United Nations for the remainder of the biennium 2018–2019, as well as for the upcoming proposed programme budget for the year 2020. (...) The Advisory Committee recommends that the General Assembly take note of paragraph 20 of the statement by the Secretary-General, i.e. that, should it approve the recommendations of the Commission: (a) The requirements for the biennium 2018–2019 for the Secretariat would be addressed, as necessary, in the context of the first and second performance reports for the biennium 2018–2019, as appropriate, and the requirements for the year 2020 would be taken into account in the context of that upcoming proposed programme budget; (b) The requirements for the budgets for peacekeeping operations would be addressed, as necessary, in the context of the performance reports for the period from 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019 and in the context of the upcoming proposed budgets for the financial period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020.

This matter is to be discussed further at the upcoming twentieth session of JUNIC. (d) JUNIC also discussed proposals for inter-agency information activities in the follow-up to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, as well as information activities relating to upcoming major events, including the International Year of the Family (1994) and a series of international conferences scheduled for 1994 and 1995, leading to the observance of the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. (f) JUNIC also held extensive discussions on a comprehensive information strategy to publicize the issues before the upcoming World Summit for Social Development and the Fourth World Conference on Women, to be held in March and September 1995, respectively. JUNIC is expected to follow up on a number of activities initiated over the last year and assess progress in the implementation of system-wide information programmes for upcoming major events, including the World Summit for Social Development, the Fourth World Conference on Women and the observance of the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. -----
